Giving Back to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul
In 2016 I started a new career after 37 years with the American Red Cross. This new career is with the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in Johnstown, PA. Part of my responsibilities is to educate the community aware on the number of programs the society has to offer, which includes the Johnstown Family Kitchen. The kitchen operates a hot lunchtime program daily and serves on average 150 individuals a day. Last year the kitchen started a fund raiser called Friendsday-Wednesday. It is a soup sale on the 2nd Wednesday of each month from October to March. Individuals and community organizations are asked to sponsor the soup sale each month and two soups are sold with the proceeds benefiting the family kitchen. Through the GCU GoGive! program, I was able, with the support of family and friends, to purchase the supplies needed for the soups sold on November 13, 2019. We sold 72 quarts of vegetable and broccoli-cheese soups, with a net profit of $519.00. As a member of the GCU, I am grateful for the opportunity to give back to my community through the GoGive! Program.
