SEPRL April News
Veterans Hospital Drive
During the month of November, both Ascension Parish and St. John Cathedral held a donation drive for the Veterans Hospital of Pittsburgh. Bill Kerr, a Marine veteran, had been at the VA for an appointment when it was brought to his attention of the great need the hospital had for personal care items, books, magazines, and snacks. SEPRL shared the list with both churches and had an overwhelming response.
Bill and his wife Karen volunteered to arrange the delivery of the donated items. Karen notified children from the parish who arrived on a sunny day to help pack boxes & bags and load the van for delivery. Once at the hospital, volunteers there assisted unloading the donations and expressed their gratefulness—amazed at the amount of supplies delivered.
In addition to the Veterans Hospital, the lodge collected over 125 pairs of new socks for the City Mission Homeless Veterans Shelter in Washington, PA. The socks were packed into canvas GCU bags for delivery. When lodge volunteers arrived at the office to drop off the bags they were met by Steve who immediately noticed the GCU bags and said “Hey, I’m a member too and I love that bag!” After a brief “GCU” conversation, he thanked us for thinking of their shelter for this project.
The SEPRL 1st quarter meeting was held on Sunday, March 8 at Ascension Hall in Clairton. A tentative plan for activities and fundraising efforts was confirmed. The next meeting will be at St. John Cathedral on Sunday, June 7.
