Lodge 81 April News

April 10, 2019

Lodge 81 continued its charitable work through the Great Fast in the parish as well as the Uniontown Community.

1st Quarter Meeting

At the quarterly meeting held on Sunday, February 24, 2019 after the Divine Liturgy. Members discussed plans for the 14th Egg EggStravaganza as Lodge 81 is the primary sponsor, this event is a great success for the parish. Also discussed were donations to be made for the St. John ECF end of year bowling/pizza party.

On the weekend of February 3 before and after weekend Divine Liturgies, Marcia Harrer, Gerry Dorobish, and Bonnie Balas organized the youth of St. John Parish, for the annual “Souper Bowl of Caring” collection. Donations from the parishioners totaled $607.13, which was donated to the local St. Vincent dePaul Food Bank.

On February 10 the monthly coffee social recognized birthday celebrants which included Gerry Dorobish, Bonnie Balas and Theresa Petruska who was unable to attend due to a recent hospitalization. At the ECF classes during early February, ECF teachers who are also lodge officers (James Mihalko, Gerry Dorobish and Bonnie Balas) prepared  icons with their classes. They were blessed at the Divine Liturgy on the 1st Sunday of the Great Fast (March 10), which commemorates the Sunday of Orthodoxy-the Restoration of Icons.

Parish and community volunteering—Stephen Petruska cantored weekly Liturgies of Presanctified Gifts; Gerry Dorobish volunteered at the Mt. Macrina Religious Gift Shop and at Uniontown Public Library and Bonnie Balas taught weekly Pysanky classes during Lent to parishioners and members of the community. Many GCU members including Helen Ponzurick, Ann Kormanik, Norbert Duritsa, and Bernie Karoffa volunteer at the weekly pirohi project (over 300 dozen per week), which is a major fundraiser for the parish.

On Sunday, March 24, the Mon Valley Protopresbytery held a day of reflection. Father Stephen Wahal presented a very moving and pertinent talk for the Lenten season entitled “Thy Kingdom Come.” Many Lodge 81 members attended as well as other local GCU lodge members. A social following the presentation was sponsored by St. John Social Ministry. Cathy Phillips and Bonnie Balas helped to serve the soups, salad and other items available for refreshment.

The next quarterly meeting is scheduled for Sunday, May 19 after the Sunday Divine Liturgy.
