St. Nicholas Brunch Scholarship Awards Program
The Matching Funds project for the District 5 Scholarship ad booklet was completed on Sunday, December 29, 2019. The original date was December 1, 2019, but winter weather forced postponement of the event. Four scholarships were awarded at the 52nd Annual St. Nicholas Brunch & Scholarship Awards Program at Billy G’s Restaurant in Old Forge, PA. Three out of the four recipients were able to attend. Krista Kissel from Cresco, PA is attending Lafayette College in Easton, PA majoring in Economics with a minor in Data Science. She is a member of Lodge 945. Cory Pezak from Archbald, PA is attending Immaculata University in Malvern, PA majoring in Biology. He is a member of Lodge 92. Jason Marcin from Shavertown, PA is attending Boston College in Chestnut Hill, MA, majoring in Political Science and minoring in American Studies. He is a member of Lodge 182. Due to the date change, Sarah Foran was unable to attend. She is from Vestal, NY, attending Binghamton University in Vestal, NY, majoring in Psychology and minoring in Art. She is a member of Lodge 47.
Colleen Evans and Gina Keil were co-chairpersons for the ad-booklet. Dr. John Evans was scholarship chairperson. Thanks to the Home Office for printing and sending the solicitation letters, printing the booklets and the scholarship certificates for this event. They also provided chocolates, calendars, and pens. Thirty-two people attended the brunch.
District 5’s Fraternalist of the Year award was also presented in conjunction with the brunch. Daria Shierly was the 2019 recipient. Daria is a member of Holy Spirit Byzantine Catholic Church in Binghamton, NY and Lodge 47. She serves as District 5 vice-president and Lodge 47 secretary-treasurer. Daria has participated in national and district bowling tournaments. She is involved with her lodge’s bowling league, Helping Hands Day events, the Holy Spirit Crochet Club and serves on the Pastor’s Advisory Council. She is an advocate for the American Cancer Society, United Way, Make-A-Wish and is proud to be part of the 69th Air Defense Artillery Brigade FRG. Laure Marcin, last year’s recipient, presented her with a clock.
Lodge 47 President Bob Suflita, led us in the Hymn to Saint Nicholas, followed by God Bless America, and grace. Congratulations to both the District 5 Fraternalist of the Year and the Scholarship recipients.
